Call for applications on tech-based solutions in Tunisia to combat water shortages caused by climate change

Business Call to action alongside UNDP Tunisia and in collaboration with the Governorate of Medenine and the Institute of Arid Regions have opened a call for applications for businesses that have tech-based solutions for the efficient management of water resources.

This programme is part of BCtA’s Inclusive Innovation Journey, a project that seeks to advance government-centred innovation by replicating proven business solutions for local development challenges. The programme supports impact-driven businesses, or those who wish to have an impact, by connecting them to local government bodies that are seeking innovative, tech-driven solutions to reaching populations at the last mile.

In the case of Tunisia, the impact of climate change on smallholder farmers was identified as pertinent, as increasing water shortages linked to climate change are causing loss of crops and incomes for small farmers across the globe and in Tunisia as well. The shocks caused by COVID-19, from disruption of services to production and market-related losses for smallholder farmers further exacerbated the vulnerabilities of this group.

However, innovative solutions developed by the private sector and aided by the rapid advancement of technology, can help farmers mitigate losses and secure their income and livelihoods – which is where the Inclusive Innovation journey seeks to fill the gap. Through assessment of on the ground challenges and in collaboration with public entities and local partners, the Inclusive Innovation programme is seeking solutions from businesses that can support the efficient management of water resources for small olive growers in Medenine.

Tunisian companies or commercial initiatives that have been operation for at least one year and have an active solution in place already serving clients and that have the potential impact on low-income populations are eligible to apply by January 21.

Once selected, companies will begin their Inclusive Innovation Journey and benefit from a training programme, mentorship and networking opportunities with public entities and companies in the agritech sector, meet with potential stakeholders and have the option to connect with local public entities to scale their business model.
