Guidelines and Tool Kits

  • Striking a balance between profits and impact: This report takes an in-depth look at a challenge common to many setting up an inclusive business – how to decide whether to pursue faster break-even or wider social impact? Developed by the Business Innovation Facility.
  • Base of the Pyramid Protocol: A participatory business incubation process that allows companies to develop new inclusive business opportunities in partnership with local communities.  In addition to protocol documentation, the initiative offers an interactive website for practitioners using the tool.
  • The Partnering Toolbok: A publication of The Partnering Initiative, the toolbook is a concise guide to effective partnerships between companies and non-profits, governments, and other organizations.  Available Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi (Persian), French, German, Hindi, Portuguese, Serbian, Spanish, Swahili, Russian and Vietnamese.
  • WBCSD-IBLF Business Guide to Development Actors: Resources intended to introduce business managers to potential partners in the development community, including a PDF guide and online database of non-profit organizations working in the sustainable development field.
  • Measuring Value of Business Call to Action Initiatives:  Developed by the Business Call to Action to help member companies report on inclusive business results.
  • Base of the Pyramid Impact Assessment Framework: Developed by the University of Michigan’s Ted London.
  • Impact Reporting and Investment Standards (IRIS): A common set of indicators to define, measure and report social and environmental impact developed in 2009 by the Acumen Fund, The Rockefeller Foundation and B-Lab, in conjunction with PwC and Deloitte and with support from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).  Designed to meet needs for consistency and comparability of data while allowing flexibility in the methodologies and frameworks used to gather and organize that data.
  • Oxfam Poverty Footprint: Methodology to help companies understand how they affect people, communities, and countries in five areas of activity and impact:  value chains, macro-economy, institutions and policy, social implications of environmental practices, and product development and marketing.   Must be carried out by an independent research team supported by the company and an NGO, such as Oxfam, with development expertise.
  • WBCSD Measuring Impact Framework: An approach to measuring and assessing the impact of core business activities on development, generated over two years of collaboration with more than 20 companies and 15 external stakeholders from academia, the NGO community, and government.  Not a reporting or benchmarking tool but rather a methodology which can be adapted by sector, country context, and company objectives for the measurement exercise.
  • Barriers to Progress: A Review of Challenges and Solutions to Inclusive Business Growth:  This BCtA publication explores the challenges that member companies and partner organizations struggle with as they develop inclusive business initiatives. The publication provides an overview of research conducted by IBLF and Accenture Development Partnerships.
