Boosting Access to Health Care
Dimagi is promoting access to health care for seven million people in rural India through its innovative mobile phone based application that helps health care workers to collect data and monitor patient care more efficiently and effectively. Through this initiative, 70,000 community health workers located in areas lacking basic medical care will have access to an open-source mobile application that is available for download on most mobile handsets.
The application, called CommCare, allows lower-skilled health workers to store and access patient information, monitor at-risk patients, and access a central database with disease and treatment information through mobile phones made available to rural health clinics. This application is linked to a network of health clinics through India’s National Rural Health Mission, which seeks to promote good health through basic illness prevention, first aid, family planning, childhood vaccinations, and other government-supported health programs.
Community workers hired to support this program send information about patients to government health clinics. Physicians at these health clinics monitor a patient’s progress or identify those in need of urgent care.
