Customizable Agricultural Information Tool for Farmers
Thomson Reuters, the financial information and news company, is providing accurate, timely and local information on more than 150 crop types from 1,000 markets in India. Reuters Market Light (RML) is a subscription service providing farmers with commercial information that is personalized to the individual needs of each farmer. It includes local market prices, agricultural news, advisory tips and district-level weather forecast delivered daily via SMS to mobile phones in the subscribers local language, enabling them to make better business decisions and enhance their incomes. To date, it has reached an estimated one and half million farmers across 15,000 villages. Nearly 200,000 farmers have directly paid to use the service.
As part of its Business Call to Action commitment, Reuters Market Light will expand operations throughout India where it is expected to reach several million farmers in the next four years. Once the business model, technology and partnerships are firmly established, Thomson Reuters will also explore potential roll-out to other developing markets in Africa, South America and Asia.
